CBS is officially in the superhero game. Variety reports that the broadcast network has given a series order to Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist as the title character. The series, which was considered a lock for a series order, will debut on the fall.
The series follows Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Benoist) — Superman’s cousin — at age 24, when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be, after leaving Krypton and hiding her powers. Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh and David Harewood are also series regulars, while Laura Benanti is playing Kara’s birth mother Alura in a recurring role with Helen Slater and Dean Cain playing mystery roles.
The series appears to be an attempt to shake up CBS’ lineup, which draws strong viewership but also — with the exception of The Big Bang Theory — tends to skew much older than the other networks.
