King of the Ring sucked.

The original format of having all the matches on one night meant you had very short matches and oftentimes double count-outs or the like to cheat a match out of the tournament. The new format of having just a few of the matches on a show didn't work either, because the tournament didn't have the same meaning because guys weren't working multiple matches.... it was just like any other match outcome.

And then they stuck every asshole with the "king" gimmick.

But... I think it could work in NXT. They love doing NXT live events. I love watching them. Have eight qualifiers strung out on the four weeks of TV tapings before the live event, and then have the 7 "tournament" matches on the live card. Will there be short matches? Sure. But the KOTR format might actually boost one of these younger talents, especially if they're getting the Raw audience to watch it.

You could have it once a year, and the winner gets a spot in the Royal Rumble. Or the winner gets a spot in Money in the Bank. Or the winner gets an opportunity at an Intercontinental (or equivalent) title shot on a Pay Per View.

So yeah, King of the Ring sucked.

But I think it'd work in NXT.

Yes? No? Thoughts?

Maybe the same tournament idea under a different name? I think there's only so much they can do with "King" Whoever as a gimmick.

I would love for them to drop that entirely. Funny

They should have a NXT Rumble match to determine contenders for the NXT Title.
If it were to push someone to the main roster though, they could use the KOTR format thing. Like, calling it... "Survival of the Fittest". They would either have X qualifying matches or they'd have an elimination Battle Royal-kind of match to find a winner, and put said person in the Annual Royal Rumble match / MITB / Mid Card Title way.

I've always maintained it should return as a full on WWE PPV anyway, but have the whole month leading up to it used for the tournament. I just wouldn't allows former World Champions in the tournament, like we do here with XWA's version, so ensure someone "new" wins the thing.

The NXT idea is a decent one, though. I'd just start a new one for them and make it like their WrestleMania on the WWE Network.

You claim you hated the original format of the King of the Ring but then suggested this

So im confused, you hated the original concept but you think it'll work in NXT? The same way you described the qualifiers is the same way they happened on Raw and or Smackdown back in the day lol. I dont care how much of the Raw audience is watching a major NXT tournament, it's where the winner goes in terms of booking. What kind of feuds does he get, where in the card does he get placed. There have been main roster guys that won King of the Ring (Mabel, Billy Gunn) that were unable to get past the midcard even though the KOTR was supposed to be the platform into the main event.

What the Royal Rumble is to WM is what KOTR was to Summerslam. The Better King of the Rings where the ones that lasted weeks leading up into the PPV where it would have the Semi-Finals and Finals take place. The One Night Tourys where yes too much, but the King of the Ring was awesome and I think could benefit WWE today more than the Money in the Bank. It would at least add some excitement for Summerslam wondering who the Champion was going to face.

The King Gimmick yeah is stupid, but not everyone took it. Yeah you had Owen the King of Harts, and King Edge the Awesome. But really only three people really changed their names because of it. King Mabel, king booka and King Sheamus.

That is kind of the point. They put garbage wrestlers over that were obviously second or third fiddle on the card. It doesn't matter that someone won a tournament and you say he's on a role when he beat Disco Inferno to win. and, conversely, Disco Inferno beating Billy Gunn wasn't going to do anything for him.

But in NXT where everyone is on more of a level platform, it might actually elevate someone instead of being a poor writing devise as it was on the main roster. Pretty hard for King of the Ring to put KING BOOKER over when John Cena, Randy Orton, etc, aren't participating. Doesn't say much about the person if it's a mid card tournament...

But if you take the top guys in NXT, that's a different story.

To be fair, Booker winning KOTR propelled him into the main event

Survival of the Fittest is an ROH Tournament fuck off

I always thought WWE should do a round robin tournament. They got enough talent and shows to pull it off.

But yeah a single elimination like KoTR would work better in NXT.
