There are few moments more embarrassing than being called out for making a throw-away sexist comment by your female co-star, who also happens to be your girlfriend, as you clumsily navigate your way through what should have been the world’s easiest question in front of a live studio audience… Largely made up of children.
Enter Andrew Garfield, and his ill-advised answer to the simple, child-like query “How did Spider-Man make his costume?”
“He made it. He made it with his bare hands,” he said, before throwing himself under a big, pink, sexist bus by continuing: “He sewed it... It's kind of a feminine thing to do, but he really made a very masculine costume.”
“It's feminine how?” Emma Stone hit back, prompting a hasty defence and an almost audible back-tracking from Garfield, who weakly mused upon the theory that “we all have feminine in us”.
“I would say that femininity is about more delicacy and precision and detail work and craftsmanship - like my mother, she's an amazing craftsman,” he continued.
“She in fact made my first Spider-Man costume when I was three. So I use it as a compliment. To compliment the feminine not just in women but in men as well. We all have feminine in us, young men.”
This prompted co-star Jamie Foxx to make a joke about “never” having done anything remotely feminine in his life.
