The Weinstein Company will distribute Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, with a release coming in the fall of 2015. The film, a Western set after the Civil War, begins shooting in January. The Weinsteins have collaborated on all of Tarantino's films from Reservoir Dogs to Django Unchained.
Tarantino revealed that he would go ahead and make The Hateful Eight even after putting the project on hold due to the script leaking online. He sued Gawker over the leak but withdrew the suit in May. In April, he had a reading of the script that featured Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell, Amber Tamblyn, Michael Madsen, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth and Samuel L. Jackson.
The film is set in Wyoming during the winter. It focuses on the tension in a group of people after a blizzard forces a stagecoach from its route. The group includes two competing bounty hunters, a Confederate soldier and a female prisoner in a saloon.
Harvey and Bob Weinstein said: "We are incredibly excited to begin production on The Hateful Eight, as we know this picture will be as innovative, brash and of course fun as all Quentin projects prior. There is, quite simply, no other filmmaker like him, and we are as proud as ever to continue this partnership that started over 20 years ago."
It will be shot on 65mm film and have the widest 70mm film release in over twenty years. Richard Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh will produce with the Weinsteins and G. Mac Brown executive producing. The Weinstein previously revealed their involvement by tweeting the first poster in July.
