The long-rumored idea of crossing Spider-Man over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost happened, but alas. The Wall Street Journal reports that Marvel and Sony have had the long-rumored disucssions of including everyone’s favorite webslinger within Marvel’s franchise, specifically in Captain America: Civil War. Unfortunately the talks fell apart and it won’t happen.
The Journal reports that the news came out of the Sony hack that has been making all sorts of waves. If you aren’t familiar, the company has been targeted by a group known as “Guardians of Peace.” That hack has resulted in several films being leaked online along with employee passwords, some financial documents and more. Among the documents included discussions between Marvel and Sony about bringing Spider-Man in, which went as high as Sony and Disney CEOs Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger. The paper says “In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells [Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal] about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains ‘creative control, marketing and distribution.’”
The details of how this would have worked are unclear but Pascal did note in one email that Marvel wanted Spidey in Civil War. In the comic book storyline Spidey is a major player, initially siding with Tony Stark on the pro-registration side but then turning against him when he becomes concerned about the government’s totalitarian methods.
The talks eventually broke down, and Sony is apparently planning a so-called “Spidey summit” for January in order to discuss the franchise’s future at the studio.
Obviously there are a lot of implications here. The chief among them is that, at least in the recent past, Marvel has been seeking to regain the rights to at least one of their major film franchises. There have been rumors that Marvel and Fox have not been on the best of terms and so it doesn’t seem likely that they would be able to get Fantastic Four or X-Men back unless those franchises well and truly tanked enough for Fox to no longer consider them viable in-house. More interestingly though, Marvel is showing a willingness to work with the studios that hold the rights to their other franchises. The potential ramifications of this are pretty vast. And of course, if Sony can’t figure out what to do with the franchise–they have reportedly been unclear as to their direction and are throwing everything at the wall to (forgive the pun) see what sticks–they could always try to get Marvel back to the table. So while Spidey in Civil War is a dead hope at this point, we may yet see the webslinger rubbing shoulders with the Avengers.
