| We're a month away from the scheduled September 17 premiere of Seth MacFarlane's new live-action comedy for FOX, Dads, and the show is already generating some controversy. Dads already faced a scathing critical response at this summer's TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour. For the most part, critics simply did not find the pilot to be all that funny, but there were several who took offence to some of the very outdated racial and gender based humor. Deadline is now reporting that The Media Action Network for Asian Americans is requesting that certain portions of the pilot be reshot before it goes to air.
Dads: Seth MacFarlane's New Comedy Faces a Tough Room at the TCA Press Tour
The show stars Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi as video game developers who have to contend with their old-fashioned fathers, Martin Mull and Peter Reigert, moving in with them. The older dads will occasionally pepper needless racially motivated remarks into the conversation, such as saying, “There’s a reason Shanghai is a verb,” of Chinese people and referring to Asians as "Orientals."

It's Green and Ribisi's characters, and thier treatment of their Asian employee Veronica (Brenda Song), that has stirred the most vocal response, though. In order to "win over" a Chinese businessman that they're meeting with, they ask Veronica to don a sexually provocative Sailor Moon costume and "giggle demurely." The MANAA pointed out that not only is that offensive, but that the demure giggling portion of the program is actually "more of a Japanese stereotype." Veronica later mocks a text she receives from the "creepy interpreter" of his "tiny Chinese penis."
The MANAA is currently waiting to hear back from FOX about the requested changes. |
