Unless you’ve been hiding under a particularly large rock, you’re undoubtedly already familiar with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s next horror game, The Evil Within. It’s Mikami’s attempt to reinvigorate the survival horror genre, which he thinks has become stale due to a reliance on action over scares and too many sequels. I think the game looks great, even though the only “official” bits we’ve seen have been limited to screenshots. Some footage leaked out of E3 back in June that showed off a brief stealth segment, an intense chainsaw chase and a bloody hallway seemingly inspired by The Shining. Today, we have a little more.

This new footage, which found its way to the Internet after making its debut at QuakeCon earlier this week, looks very Resident Evil 4 in flavor, with enemies pouring through an open window as Sebastian shoots them down followed by his brutal death when he’s caught by a large chainsaw-wielding man. I absolutely loved Resident Evil 4, and if anything, The Evil Within looks like it will be the successor to RE4 that many of us always wanted.

Once you’re done with it, let me know what you think. The game is still a ways off, so you can expect it to look better closer to its release (sometime in 2014), but now that we’re getting a good idea of how it plays, are you impressed with it?

To me, it looks exactly like what I wanted Resident Evil 5 to be. I’m not saying Capcom didn’t do a fine job with it — I played the crap out of that game and enjoyed it immensely — but it didn’t feel much like a Resident Evil game. This does, so long as you’re a fan of the fourth game. It’s not all that surprising, seeing as Resident Evil 4 was the last game in the series Mikami played a significant part in, so we were bound to see some of that rub off in The Evil Within.

We know the direction Capcom has taken with the Resident Evil series inspired Mikami to create this game. I hope that means we’ll see it become its own game as we see more of it. I wouldn’t mind another Resident Evil 4, but I much prefer something new and exciting.

Yes! I saw the trailer a few weeks ago. Looks freakin good. Totally wanna play this.
