Who knew an old school video game could be worth so much money
Do you have $7,000 to spare? Do you enjoy spending stupid amounts of money on extremely rare old school video games?
If you answered yes to both of these questions, you’re in luck because one of the rarest games ever to be created in the history of video games, a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game cartridge, Nintendo World Champions, was recently listed on eBay for an astounding $7,000. It was initially listed for just $4,999 – a total steal of you ask me – but the price was upped Friday, Jan. 24.
There are 116 copies of the game in the wild and it was originally created in 1990 as part of a international Nintendo World Championship event. Basically, the competition was similar to what was featured in the glorified Nintendo advertisement of movie, The Wizard, starring Fred Savage (it’s still an awesome film though).
This is what a mint condition Nintendo World Championship cartridge looks like.
The event toured 29 different cities across the U.S. and the cartridge featured timed versions of three games: Super Mario, Tetris, and Rad Racer. Contestants were tasked with trying to get the highest score possible in each game in just six minutes and 21 seconds. The game was never publicly sold and the only people who got their hands on a copy, were the event’s 90 semi-finalists.
Hardcore collectors probably won’t have much interest in this listing because the cartridge’s label has been completely ripped off. Instead, the word Mario is plastered across the ripped label in blue pen ink.
But it has personality right? $7,000 is a small price to pay for an extremely rare Nintendo cartridge in horrible condition. On the bright side, the seller, muresan, has 100 per cent positive feedback on eBay.
Back in 2011, a similar cartridge in much better condition sold for about $11,500, according to Business Insider. A gold version of the Nintendo World Championships cartridge also exists and is much more valuable
