Disney has reached a deal with Paramount regarding the distribution and marketing rights to the Indiana Jones franchise.

The Mouse House already owns the films, as they were part of the bounty during their acquisition of Lucasfilm last year. But Variety reports that this new arrangement gives Disney the right to distribute and market future films, if there are any.

As part of the agreement, Paramount gets to distribute the first four films -- Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and that other one -- while all receiving a monetary cut of any new movies. Which sounds like a pretty sweet deal for Paramount, actually.

So does this news mean that Indiana Jones 5 is actually happening? Over the summer, Harrison Ford indicated that he was still up for donning the fedora once more, and a more recent rumor said that part of Ford’s deal to return as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII involved getting a commitment from Lucasfilm and Disney that a fifth Indiana Jones movie would be developed.

Variety speculates that now that the studio has secured these rights, “they likely will move quickly to get a film in motion” and that “Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has expressed a lot of interest to monetize the brand ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm.”
