Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has claimed there's nothing separating the next-gen consoles on a technical level.

In the latest issues of Edge magazine (via The Sixth Axis), Mikami revealed that he thinks "we only need one console."

"There’s no real difference between them," he explained. "We only need one console. Why do I have to make two versions of a game? And when Xbox One was first announced it had lower specs than PS4, but now they’re almost identical. So either will do.

Mikami is currently working on the last game he'll ever direct, The Evil Within, an upcoming horror title for both current and next-gen consoles, as well as PC. When we got a look at the game, we were impressed with how it's trying to return to the roots of classic survival horror. The debut trailer's pretty horrifying, too.

His comments to Edge are slightly at odds with what other individuals have said, however. An array of developers, who chose to remain anonymous, said in the past that the PlayStation 4 has greater raw potential in terms of power. This claim has been refuted by Microsoft not once, but twice, especially since the company upped the Xbox One's GPU.

Even though both consoles are due to release next month, this looks like a debate that's shows no sign of quietening down any time soon.

That's recockulous. They should just make it for both and be done with it.
