Producer Roy Lee says his long-gestating film adaptation of Stephen King's It will, if all goes according to plan, go before cameras this year.
"It will hopefully be shooting later this year. We just got the California tax credit," Lee told Collider. "Gary Doberman wrote the most recent draft working with Andy Muscetti, so it’s being envisioned as two movies."
Muscetti (Mama) will direct the film, which Lee says will carry an R-rating. A final draft is close to being turned in. The plan remains to produce a two-film adaptation of the King novel. According to Lee:
"We’re taking it and making the movie from the point of view of the kids, and then making another movie from the point of view of the adults, that could potentially then be cut together like the novel. But it’s gonna be a really fun way of making this movie."
It originally had True Detective's Cary Fukunaga aboard to direct, but the filmmaker parted ways with the project since he and New Line Cinema couldn't agree on what type of film they wanted to make. He had cast The Revenant and The Maze Runner's Will Poulter as the evil clown Pennywise.
