Following the arrests of James Stumbo and Kevin Norton on Friday in connection with the Pokemon World Championship, police said the charges avoided a “potential tragedy.”

Both Stumbo and Norton were charged with numerous firearm charges after police confiscated a 12-gauge shotgun, a DPM5 Model AR-15 rifle along with 250 rounds of ammunition, and a hunting knife from their vehicle.

“We can never read someone’s mind,” says Police Superintendent Paul A. Fitzgerald to the press, when questioned what the pair intended to do with the weapons. “What we can read is what they were saying and the actions that they took, bringing the weapons they were showing online as a threat.”

“That could have been a mass shooting. So obviously the federal agencies were concerned with that.”

On Monday, Boston Municipal Court Judge Lisa A. Grant ordered both Norton and Stumbo to be held without bail. A dangerousness hearing has been set for September 1.

The motives of the two men are currently unknown. In court on Monday, defense lawyers for both men argued neither have a criminal record, and both are in employment.

“Inside, there were a lot of kids, a lot of gamers, and thank God we were able to cut off whatever these two individuals coming from Iowa were up to,” says Police Commissioner William B. Evans.

According to District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, the full list of charges now read as: unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of a large capacity rifle. Neither men face charges for making online threats, but the investigation is ongoing.
