As I joked over the weekend, it was only a matter of time until FilmDistrict and Sony Pictures announced Insidious: Chapter 3.

With full details forthcoming, Borys Kit of THR broke the news on Twitter that Leigh Whannell is currently attached to pen the third chapter. Whannell, who co-created Saw with James Wan, penned both Insidious films, and also starred in both as “Specs” (below left), one half of the ghost hunting duo.

Word from the inside is that the third film will be bringing back Lin Shaye’s character as well as both ghost hunters Specs and Tucker (all three pictured below).

Insidious: Chapter 2 has been confirmed to have pulled in a whopping $41M this past Friday the 13th weekend. It also makes director James Wan the second ever to have two films in the same year with $40M openings (the Matrix sequels).
