The Tracking Board reports that the previously in-development live-action Mortal Kombat movie reboot is starting to get some movement again in Hollywood. Per the report, director James Wan (Furious 7, Saw) is now attached to produce the film for New Line Cinema and Broken Road.
Previously, Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series producer Kevin Tancharoen was attached to produce the project before leaving in 2013. Two other live-action Mortal Kombat movies were released in theaters in 1997. The first was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson in 1995, and the second, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, was released in 1997.
The new film that is being developed by Wan will reportedly follow a male protagonist who is drawn into an interdimensional tournament, which will determine the fate of the Earth. He soon realizes his true potential from the experience. The current script is written by Legacy writer Oren Uziel and Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Godzilla).
Wan is also attached to direct the upcoming Aquaman film for Warner Bros. due out on July 27, 2018.
