Deadline has updated its box office figures for the new Fantastic Four, and so far it is not looking good for the embattled reboot. The latest estimates have the film grossing anywhere from $11 million to about $11.5 million on its opening day. This includes $2.7 million from early Thursday showings.
The film currently has only a C- grade on CinemaScore, which is lower than Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Elektra and even Catwoman. Initial tracking had the film grossing anywhere from about $40 to $50 million for its opening weekend. Deadline’s current estimates have the film now grossing in the range of $27-29 million for its opening weekend.
Still, the film is in a tight race for this weekend’s No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. It is competing with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation for the top spot at the moment. The sequel is estimated to make in the range of $28-29 million this weekend.
Fantastic Four was the subject of a great deal of controversy online all throughout its production. On Thursday, director Josh Trank publicly disowned the film on Twitter, suggesting the studio was to blame for its bad reviews.
