Actor Tom Holland is the new silver screen Spider-Man, Sony Pictures and Marvel announced today. Holland will play Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter-ego in the next Spider-Man movie, which is expected to hit theaters July 28, 2017.

Marvel and Sony also announced who's helming the film: director Jon Watts.

British-born Holland, 19, has appeared in the television adaptation of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and Ron Howard's film adaptation of In the Heart of the Sea. Watts' most recent work is the thriller Cop Car, a Kevin Bacon vehicle that debuted at Sundance earlier this year.

Holland takes over the mantle of Spider-Man from Andrew Garfield, who appeared in two Amazing Spider-Man films for Sony Pictures. Watts takes over for Marc Webb, who directed the two most recent Spidey movies.

"It's a big day here at Sony," Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures group chairman said in a statement. "The Marvel process is very thorough, and that's why their results are so outstanding. I'm confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start."

"As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life," added Marvel producer Kevin Feige. "We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring."

Marvel and Sony Pictures announced in February that they'd struck a deal to bring Spider-Man, a character who did not cross over with the comic book publisher's other properties thanks to licensing deals, to Marvel's Cinematic Universe.

The new Spider-Man will make his first appearance in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, then go on to star in his own film. Characters from the Avengers and other Marvel superhero films will cross over to Spider-Man's movies.

Sony Pictures has maintained rights to Spider-Man since 1999 and produced five films featuring the superhero: three under director Sam Raimi and two under Marc Webb.

Spider-Man was a key character in Marvel's Civil War arc that ran in the company's comic books in 2006. Marvel is producing a new film based on that arc, Captain America: Civil War, which is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
