While we’re still waiting on an official announcement – and we could be waiting for several months still – pretty much everyone involved with Lucha Underground is going ahead as if there will be a second season of the show. There are currently episodes taped through August, with the “Ultimo Lucha” two hour season finale, and it’s likely they would start taping soon after those make air.

In 2014 they taped the first set of shows in early September, with the premiere airing a little less than 8 weeks later. Again, this is mostly speculation and nothing has been confirmed, but if the promotion does return for tapings in mid-August, on a similar schedule that would likely mean the season two premiere for some time in late September or early October 2015.

It’s been reported before, but it’s likely they’ll have to tackle some production costs, as a lot of money has been spent on producing Lucha Underground. While it’s almost universally acclaimed by critics (including me, if you want to call me a critic), and those who watch rarely have a bad thing to say, the numbers on El Rey just aren’t there to support the current production budget.

Dave Meltzer reports that one thing being discussed is getting out of the warehouse in Los Angles and doing shows in different locations; possibly others states, with Texas being mentioned. They’ll probably want to limit themselves to the Southwest if they do decide to tour.

Of course, as we’ve been reporting for months, the goal is to get Lucha Underground on the hugely visible Univision station in the U.S., and on Televisa in Mexico. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that a deal with Televisa would be a “game changer” for the promotion, which would be available on more TV sets than even AAA. If Univision comes through, they would be in more homes and likely watched by more fans than Impact Wrestling, putting them in the number two position behind WWE. Again, these are the Spanish-language broadcasts we’re talking about, and the English show would remain exclusive to El Rey, but given that its their target demographic for Lucha Underground, getting on those two networks is crucial to finding success in a second season.

Rey Mysterio and Alberto El Patron are expected to be the top two stars from a marketing standpoint, having semi-recent WWE exposure and as two of the biggest names in Mexican wrestling. Of course, that’s if the money is there.
