The Arrow and The Flash universe keeps on growing, with word dropping this evening that a “potential” spin-off of The CW hits is in the works and will feature several recurring characters from the DC/CW world, including Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh), Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and former Black Canary Caity Lotz.

According to Deadline, Arrow creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim are working with The CW on the project for next season.

While the series currently has no title, it is in development and being described as “a superhero team-up show.” Since the series is in the early stages right now, Deadline cautions that other Arrow and Flash characters could also show up in the spin-off. In addition, the new program will include three “major” DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series before.

As our own Eric Goldman points out, not including Robbie Amell (who plays Ronnie Raymond/Firestorm in the DC/CW universe) seems odd and could be an oversight in this report, since Garber plays an older version of Firestorm.

Routh Talks Possible The Atom Spin-Off

IGN's Roth Cornet spoke with Brandon Routh last month about the possibility of Ray Palmer getting a spin-off. Here's what he said:

"With any character you bring on this show that's a possibility, depending on how the fans react and the character is received and developed," the actor said. "You know they've shown with The Flash that just being a part of Arrow that it can work. It's exciting. The sky's the limit. DC and The CW have done a great job with the two shows and the platforms in terms [of] being their own entities. What the future holds, who knows? But anything is a possibility."

While Routh, Garber and Miller will reprise their roles from Arrow and/or The Flash, Lotz’s character on the series isn’t quite as clear cut since her Sara Lance was killed off and replaced by her sister Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). Will she return from the dead? Time will tell!

I would love this. This announcement has received mixed reactions since some people don't like the idea of having too many characters, but I love that they're expanding the DCTVU with all these characters. DC has the best shows.

They may have the better shows but at the same time, people are going to get tired of DC oversaturating the fanbase with all these tv shows. Sometimes too much is not a good thing.

I disagree. Part of the reason so many people loved the DCTVU is because it was expanding. When Flash was announced, everyone was excited that DC was creating a legitimate TV universe. If they can find a way to crossover Supergirl and Constantine, the more the merrier.

It's like saying Marvel is saturating the fan base by making too many movies.

As long as it's all timed right and produced well, I think it's fucking awesome.

I saw someone on another site suggesting that this could be The Outsiders? IIRC they're a team put together by Batman, but if they had an episode where Ollie was all "FORM A TEAM AND FUCK OFF TO YOUR OWN SHOW" on Arrow, he could be the stand-in Batman.

Although it seems odd that Atom would want to team with a villain, a corpse, and only one half of a split personality superhero. Although Black Canary could just be in it in flashbacks?

Katie was a much better actress for Canary than the girl who plays Laurel, but Laurel is Canary in the comics, so she could just be Laurel as Canary.

I hated the first female who played Canary in Arrow <_<

Well, you'll be happy to know that in the comics, Laurel (the new Canary) is the actual Canary.

I love her, but she's not very good right now. I hope they make her much better later on.
