The release date for the fifth Bourne film has been revealed.

Matt Damon's return as Jason Bourne will release on July 29, 2016, Universal has announced.

The film, which also sees director and producer Paul Greengrass return to the franchise, takes the slot left by the next Planet of the Apes instalment, which moved its release back to 2017.

Last year, Damon confirmed that the project would be hitting screens in 2016, while admitting all he needed to sign on to the sequel was for Greengrass to do the same.

He said: "Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

It has also been announced that Greengrass and Damon will be writing the screenplay themselves, alongside Christopher Rouse.
