Justin Lin is to direct 'Star Trek 3'.

The 'Fast & Furious' director has been chosen to replace Roberto Orci, who has relinquished the role but decided to stay on as a producer of the eagerly awaited film.

Although there were a number of high-profile directors linked to the coveted role, including Morten Tyldum of 'The Imitation Game', Lin was the only person to actually be offered the responsibility, according to Deadline.

The news, which has been confirmed by Lin's representatives, was only made possible after his proposed 'Bourne Legacy' sequel starring Jeremy Renner was delayed to allow Matt Damon to return to the Bourne franchise.

In the more immediate term, Lin is busy working on season two of the US crime drama series 'True Detective', but once his work on the show is complete, he will turn his attentions to 'Star Wars 3'.

JJ Abrams opted not to direct 'Star Trek 3' so that he could focus his attentions on 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'.

However, many of the stars who appeared in earlier 'Star Trek' films are expected to reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg.

'Star Trek 3' is tipped for release in 2016.
