| “What a night we’ve had here in Boise, Idaho for our ninety fifth live Vendetta show!” “Fucking a-men to that Teddy. We’re well on our way to Xtreme-fucking-Mania now.” “You can say that again Joey, and we’re not even finished with tonight, we’ve still got that no-disqualifications main event match featuring the runner-up of the King of Xtreme tournament, Akira Kobayashi and the former number one contender for the XWA World Heavyweight Championship, Razor Xtreme.” “Yeah, but they’re both a pair of fucking losers. Neither one of them could get the job done at King o’ Xtreme…” “Precisely why both men will be eager to get another win under their belts and get the ball rolling again. You can guarantee they’ll both be wanting to make a statement here tonight.”
Just as Theodore finishes his sentence, the lights in the arena suddenly go out, plunging the venue in pitch-black darkness, save for the occasional flash of the fans’ cameras to try and bring some illumination to the Taco Bell Arena.
“The fuck is this shit? Who didn’t pay the fucking electric bill…” “Erm… it would appear we’re experiencing some technical difficulties here folks, please bear with us.”
The sound system sputters and booms to life, startling Joey and causing him to jump.
“FUCK!”
Silence once again fills the arena. Alcest’s “Beings of Light” begins to play out over the public announce system, gradually getting louder and louder until abruptly cutting off as the titantron flickers with static. Eventually the footage being displayed on screen settles upon a robed figure, slowly walking down a dark, stone-walled hall, an old wooden torch lights his path ahead. Each footstep is clearly audible, echoing around the seating as they would down the corridor. The film looks dated, shot with obviously shoddy equipment as scratches continually roll with the movie upon the big screen. The camera cuts to a side view of the hooded figure as he arrives at a large wooden door, arched in shape. “HE WILL RISE” flashes up on the screen in red Times New Roman font on a black background for a second or two, before the screen returns to this man at the door. Slowly he raises his fist and slams the knuckles against the wood, the noise of the bone and oak connecting booming through the speaker system. The man gradually draws his hand back before once again bringing it down against the door, again the sound of it travels swiftly through the arena. The man knocks on this giant door a third time and the words “HE SEEKS HIS VENGEANCE” come up on the screen, written in the same manner as the last message. Back to the enigmatic individual the camera seems to be interested in, the door creaks open, revealing a room blanketed in darkness. The man steps inside. Once again the camera cuts away and opens up inside of the room with the hooded figure stepping in. He joins a circle of similarly dressed men, the room lit only by the glow of candles and flames that they encircle. Organ music begins to play, with the men chanting in an indistinguishable, low tone. The camera begins to pan up above the circle of men, cutting back to the man that just entered the room as he begins to raise his hands up to his hood then cutting back to the camera as it rises gradually into a bird’s eye-view. The pace of the music quickens as the chanting gets louder, though the phrases and words are still unrecognisable as the man’s hands finally grasp a-hold of the sides of the hood. The camera reaches the peak of its ascent as the hood is finally pulled down, revealing a full head mask with two, large eyes painted on it, reminiscent of that of Venom from the Spider-man comics. The circle is revealed to have formed around that of a flaming pentagram with a lone candle on a stand in the middle. The man wearing the venom mask begins to walk towards the centre of the cultist circle, the camera cutting to an angle focusing on the candle, the man in the background. The glow of the candle’s flame highlights the shadows and contours of the man’s face underneath the mask. His hand comes up, two fingers closing in on the flame, extinguishing it and blacking out the screen. The words “THE CULT CALLS” remain lingering on the screen before fading away as Vendetta goes to a commercial break. |
