For my Friday column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, I spoke to former WWE writer and current Lucha Underground producer, Chris DeJoseph.

I asked DeJoseph questions about Lucha Undergound to better learn what to expect from the new wrestling program that debuts on the El Rey network on October 29th. The following is an excerpt:

A new option for American wrestling fans has arrived.

WWE is fighting the battles of a publicly traded company in the entertainment business with a wrestling ring as their main stage. TNA has become a punchline with its spending of millions of dollars and bad publicity. Ring of Honor has an old-school feel but seems to be plated as a permanent No. 3. Global Force Wrestling headed by Jeff Jarrett’s gotten people asking questions for almost a year now.

Welcome, Lucha Underground. On Oct. 29, the company will debut on the El Rey network. It’s an English-language network targeting Latin American culture. It is available on a majority of major cable and satellite providers in the United States both on the guide and OnDemand.

The wrestling show filled with colorful characters and costumes isn’t touring arenas around the world but is making its home in the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles. Former WWE writer and producer, Chris DeJoseph is working as the co-executive producer on the show.

“We’re in an old grungy warehouse shooting this, so the show feels very real,” says DeJoseph, who compared the show to a Fight Club feel when describing the concept. From the video trailers already released, it has the intimate feel proven to be high energy for professional wrestling and produced with an acute storytelling vision.

The roster has a balance of former WWE faces, independent wrestling stars and international stars. John Morrison will perform as Johnny Mundo. Independent wrestling star Ricochet is known in Lucha Underground as Prince Puma. Then there’s guys like Fenix who is known in Mexico and Japan.

CLICK HERE for who they are targeting, the big name producer behind the whole show and more.
