TMZ reports that the New York City Office of Cheief Medical Examiner has released the official cause of death for Joan Rivers. The comedienne died after going into hypoxic arrest during her throat procedure. This caused a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting in brain damage. Rivers was sedated with Propofol at the time. She had the procedure to examine changes in her voice and to fix her acid reflux problems.

The medical examiner labeled the lack of oxygen as a “predictable complication”, as it’s a risk involved with anesthesia, the procedure or both.
