It’s still very early, but rumors are already coming in fast for the next stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First there was the report yesterday that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks to appear in Captain America 3 as Tony Stark in a storyline that would kick off Marvel’s film version of the Civil War arc, and now Bad Ass Digest says that Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are Marvel’s top choice to direct The Avengers 3 and The Avengers 4.
The site reports that the Russos, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are “the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige want to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon.” Badass claims that Marvel is considering the third film from the Star-Spangled Avenger to be “Avengers 2.5 and that it “could feature Cap’s new team from the end of Age of Ultron. Last I heard (and they haven’t shot this scene yet, so it could change) that team is Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow, as well as probably The Vision (although I have been told Black Widow will not be much of a presence in Cap 3).”
Obviously all of this is rumor and conjecture at this point, but it is easy to see where Marvel could be going in terms of a Civil War storyline if this is true. That would leave Tony Stark with (assuming they all survive this long) Hawkeye, Thor and Hulk unless they stay on the sidelines; Hulk wasn’t on Earth during that period in the comics and Thor was believed dead at the time. In addition there are Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, the ever-present rumors of Captain Marvel and Black Panther films and however Guardians of the Galaxy may fit in. On the other hand, there is still the Thanos storyline to fit in there unless they maneuver that into Guardians 2 in some way.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1st, 2015 and obviously we’ll know a lot more at that point.
