This is fully unconfirmed, so take this as a rumor for now. I repeat: this is an unconfirmed rumor. Now, with that out of the way, Drew McWeeny at HitFlix is reporting that according to sources he has, Sony may be moving to make the Spider-Man franchise connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some way.
According to the article, while Fox has been a thorn in Marvel’s side about the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises–an antagonism that has reportedly lead to the Fantastic Four comic being cancelled–Sony is “doing things the opposite way.” The piece says that there are some “very cool Spider-Man plans being discussed” that would refocus the franchise and open up some potential “connections” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The site adds that “What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will.”
This was all in terms of a discussion of The Avengers 3, which as was reported earlier today could have a brand-new team as Marvel works on ways to utilize the current Avengers cast’s commitments in the best way. Does this mean that Andrew Garfield will be getting a web-headed induction into the superhero team? Not necessarily. There’s a lot up in the air right now and again, nothing is confirmed. With the notoriously delicate negotiations that would have to take place in that kind of situation, it could all easily fall through. But it is possible that we could at least get cameos or some sort of cross-referencing that takes place, where they acknowledge that it’s all part of one universe: things like Avengers Tower in the background as Spidey swings along or Tony Stark having a meeting with someone from Oscorp.
