TMZ reports that Stephen Collins, who played the father on 7th Heaven, admitted to his wife that he has molested children. The confession was taped and the New York Police Department has now opened a criminal investigation about his sexual contact with children.
Collins is currently in the middle of a divorce with actress Faye Grant. He confessed in 2012 to molesting or exposing himself to several underage girls years before the divorce. The two went to a therapist where she asked him about the details and he willingly gave them. However, he wasn’t aware that she was taping the therapy session, which is legal in California. It’s legal to record conversations in secret to gather evidence that the other person committed a violent felony.
On the tape, Collins refers to a “disclosure” and a “list”. He had previously confessed his crimes to his wife, which is what caused the therapy session. He said that he molested an eleven-year-old girl in New York, a relative of his first wife. He said: “There was one moment of touching where her hand, I put her hand on my penis.” He also said that he exposed himself to her “a couple of times” when she was 11, 12 and 13. Grant asked if he had an erection and he replied: “No, I mean, no. Partial, maybe I think.”
Grant asks him about other girls and he mentions a girl in Los Angeles who lived in their neighborhood. He tried to make amends by apologizing years later. Collins has trouble on the tape keeping track of the names, but he admits to another girl from New York, who was 12 or 13.
The NYPD have the tape and last Wednesday, two detectives from the Special Victims Unit flew to Los Angeles to interview Grant. They asked her about the tape and other witnesses. The investigation is ongoing and active. An official said that there are “at least three victims” and the investigation is about the “inappropriate sexual contact with minors.” One victim, the relative of Collins’ first wife, reported the molestation in 2012. While it’s been decades since the molestation, they think it can be prosecuted because the statute of limitations runs from the date of reporting.
Collins is on the National Board of the Screen Actors Guild. He’s starred on several shows with young actresses including 7th Heaven, ABC Family’s The Fosters and Revolution.
