As we noted last week, NXT wrestler Troy McClain was released by WWE along with NXT Diva Kendall Skye.

According to The Wrestling Observer, McClain’s NXT release came as a surprise to many backstage in WWE, as he was considered a “John Cena guy” which many felt would protect McClain from being cut.

Cena spotted McClain working out in a gym at The University of Southern California a few years back and got him a tryout with WWE. McClain was also endorsed by the likes of Jim Ross and Gerald Brisco, who felt he had the potential to become the next John Cena.
