| HBO greenlights Game of ThronesAfter months of speculation, the last of the details have been worked out, the deal is finally done and it's now official. The executive producers and showrunners on the project will be David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Benioff and Weiss will also be writing every episode for the series, save for one each season that will be written by the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin, himself a former TV writer. This will be the first television project for Weiss and Benioff, but both have experience in novels as well as feature films. David Benioff is the author of the novel The 25th Hour and the collection When the Nines Roll Over: and Other Stories. His screenwriting credits include Troy, Stay, and The 25th Hour, and the film versions of Wolverine and The Kite Runner. Dan Weiss has written the novel Lucky Wander Boy and the screen adaptations for the forthcoming films Halo, based on the videogame, and Pattern Recognition, from the William Gibson story. He and Benioff also worked together on the screenplay for Ender’s Game, adapting the novel by Orson Scott Card.
When the first signs of the show's serialization materialized, it was believed that the show would derive from the information in the novels, using them as source material to bring A Song of Ice and Fire to life on the small screen. During the press conference for the show's announcement, it was stated that the show will in fact be using the book as source material, but not in the way in which it was suspected. Throughout the series, characters and their stories are tied back to events that took place many years before the start of the first novel. It is in these years that the upcoming series will cover. When asked about the decision to do a prequel instead of basing the show off of the novels, Weiss stated, "The answers simple really, you can't sell an unfinished product. If we'd begun the series where the books began, we'd pass the source material. The decision to start the series before the books allows room for their completion and for us to present the viewers with the truest form of the story." With the questions of the show's creation answered, eyes turn now to who will be cast in the upcoming series. |

| Game of Thrones casts first starsIn the first of many announcements to come regarding casting, Game of Thrones puts a face to a fan favorite with the selection of Ben Barnes of Dorian Gray and The Chroninicles of Narnia fame as Eddard Stark. The young star joins the cast after rumors of names such as Richard Armitage, Sam Claflin, and David Wenham were swirled around. With an upcoming film Seventh Son set to hit theaters next year, this will be the English actor's first role on the small screen. Though much unlike his previous roles, feeling is that Barnes will be able to capture the reserved and stoic nature that is the Quiet Wolf of Winterfell. When looking for a man who embodied the strength and charisma that was synonymous with the young Lord of Storm's End, the casting crew had only to look to Vikings star Clive Standen. Not sword and shield dramas, the actor of Camelot and Hammer of the Gods fame takes up the role as the foster brother of a young Eddard Stark and a man known for his love of women and wine. When asked about him being cast once again as a hammer wielding fighter, Standen had this to say, "It's funny really because from what I've been told, they'd been looking heavily at other names up until a relative of one of the casting crew and apparently a big fan of the book series handed the guy the first season of Vikings and from there here I am." |
