Dr. Dre has become the first billionaire in hip hop after agreeing to sell his Beats Electronics headphone range to Apple for a cool $3.2bn.

In a video shot by rapper and actor, Tyrese Gibson, the man known only to his ma as Andre Young, looks directly into the camera and boasts, The first billionaire in hip hop right here from the motherf**in' West Coast."

Dre founded the company in 2008 along with Jimmy Iovine, the co-founder of Interscope Records -- of which Dre's Aftermath Records is associated, revolutinising a stagnant headphone market.

The company made him one of the highest paid rap artists for the past few years despite not putting out a record since 1999's classic 2001.

On a recent Forbes Richest List, Dre was ranked at number two behind mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs but this latest announcement will see him skyrocket to the top.
