Zayn Malik will take the stage at tonight's MTV VMAs in his first live performance as a solo artist, according to reports.

The former One Direction star has been rehearsing for the awards bash which takes place in Los Angeles this evening where he will perform with Canadian singer The Weeknd, say Heatworld.

Earlier this month Zayn posted the title of a song by The Weeknd on Twitter, writing: "High for this ... Weekend tune on a Tuesday ha."

Zayn’s mum Trisha has also been spotted in LA with her son, sparking rumours she jetted out to the US just so she could see his first solo performance.

Zayn has been living in LA in a rented home while he works on his debut solo album.

The VMAs take place tonight at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber are also set to perform with Miley Cyrus hosting the show.

Kanye West will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, following previous winners such as Beyonce, Michael Jackson and George Michael.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the VMAs with 10 nods, while Ed Sheeran is up for six awards and Kendrick Lamar is in the running for four.
