Nintendo once asked Burnout developer Criterion to make an F-Zero game.
Unfortunately, however, Criterion was too busy working on Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
Nintendo wanted the studio to make a demo for E3 2011, and the game would have potentially been released as a Wii U launch title.
Nintendo Life confirmed the report with Criterion founder Alex Ward, who said that a conversation took place and a quick turnaround was required.
The future of F-Zero was cast into doubt by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, who said that he was struggling for an idea to make it a "great game again".
F-Zero content was added to Mario Kart 8 as DLC, while Captain Falcon appeared in Super Smash Bros on Wii U and 3DS.
An F-Zero mini-game also featured in Wii U launch title Nintendo Land.
