US Weekly reports that Netflix has postponed the debut of Bill Cosby’s upcoming comedy special Bill Cosby 77. It was set to arrive on the day after Thanksgiving.
In a statement, Netflix said: “At this time we are postponing the launch of the new stand-up comedy special Bill Cosby 77.”
This comes after former supermodel Janice Dickinson (now 59) has claimed that Cosby raped her in Lake Tahoe in 1982. She also said she tried to talk about it in her memoir in 2002, but his lawyers stopped it. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said: “The next morning I woke up, and I wasn’t wearing my pajamas. I remember before I passed out, thinking that I had been sexually assaulted by this man.”
She is the third woman to accuse Cosby of rape in the past week. On Monday, Joan Tarshis provided graphic details in an interview with CNN after Cosby’s lawyers denied the allegations. At least four women overall have accused Cosby of sexual assault. One of them filed a lawsuit that was settled out of court in 2004.
Cosby’s lawyer released the following statement to NPR on Sunday: “Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced. The fact they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives.”
Meanwhile, TVLine reports that NBC has canceled plans to develop a new comedy series that would have starred Cosby. It was set to be executive produced by Tom Werner (The Cosby Show) for a debut in either the summer or fall of next year. Cosby would have played Jonathan Franklin, the head of a “multigenerational family” who “imparts his decades of wit, wisdom and experience on his children and grandchildren.”
TMZ added that his comedy shows on stage are still set to continue. Executives at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas met today and decided to go ahead with his nearly sold-out show tomorrow. He’s also scheduled to perform in Melbourne, Florida on Friday in a show that will continue as planned. The show is sold out and according to the King Center’s representatives, no one has asked for a refund. Another show that won’t be canceled is Cosby’s upcoming performance in Las Vegas on November 28, which still has seats available. The same applies to his scheduled January shows. Venues have said it wouldn’t be right to cancel Cosby’s shows based on claims with no formal charges filed.
