A true legend of film and television has left us. TMZ reports that James Garner passed away last night at the age of eighty-six. Garner was found at his home after an ambulance was dispatched there around 8 PM PT. It is believed that he passed away of natural causes.
Garner is best known for his iconic TV roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick, but he has a long list of classic film and TV credits to his name. He began his career with a non-speaking role in the 1954 Broadway production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial and scored a role in the touring production before heading to Los Angeles and getting into TV. His first TV parts involved bit roles in the series Cheyenne, which led to more work. His role as Bret Maverick in Maverick from 1957 through 1960 was his big breakout, and he transitioned into film roles from there before turning back to TV in 1974 for The Rockford Files.
Garner's film credits included Victor Victoria, My Fellow Americans, Sunset, Marlowe, The Great Escape, The Americanization of Emily, Grand Prix and Murphy's Romance. He played the elder version of Ryan Gosling's character in The Notebook as well. Throughout his career he garnered two Emmy Award wins, three Golden Globes, an Academy Award nomination for Murphy's Romance and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Screen Actor's Guild and the Television Critics Association Awards.
