PostSubject: ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week    ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week EmptyMon Apr 07, 2014 7:48 pm

- ROH is reportedly set to make a huge announcement this week. The report says that the reveal will "move the company forward in a major way" and that a lot of talent backstage has been talking about the announcement.

This announcement has nothing to do with their May 10th and May 17th shows with New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Probably some BS about an upcoming event. Maybe they're going to whocaresville for the first time?

If you watch ROH on TV for the next 4-5 weeks you might get the impression that I quit my job and dedicated my life to following them on the road as I am possibly going to seen in each episode (as well as Supercard of Honor) since we were on the front row and they filmed down our aisle during the intros and a lot of out-of-ring stuff happened over our way.

If you're going to do nothing but bash the company for no fucking reason, then why post?. Like holy shit, you havent watched the current product so what's the basis to hate on it?

You'll have to tell me where you're sitting, Pat. I'm not in that WWE bubble and ill be looking out for ya when the shows air.

I watch ROH TV every so often. It's a crappy written television show with a stupid format. They do way too little on a week to week basis and air things months behind their occurrence.

I'm sure the five-hour show Saintpat went to was great. They're not as loaded as they were talent wise a few years ago, but they're still pretty talented. ROH the promotion is good, I trust. I'm sure if you're in a position to physically go see them, it's worth the money...

But the TV show is awful.

PostSubject: Re: ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week    ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week EmptyTue Apr 08, 2014 7:10 pm

I'm in a corner to the side of the announce team for the TV tapings. Like if Steve Coriino looks to his right, we're right there. But when they aim the camera at the announce table for the intro, we're kind of behind the camera and, obviously, not in the shot.

At Supercard of Honor, I'm in the opposite corner. There are two young guys in tuxedos and next to them is my friend Tom (I think he was wearing a red Alabama hat with a script A that night) and I'm next to him. Lot of camera time there because a lot of stuff happened in that corner (had the most room to operate for the wrestlers on that end, on our side) and also they kept shooting the guys in the tuxedos, haha.

I think I wore a blue Owen 3:16 shirt under a yellow Hawaii-style shirt, unbuttoned, for the SoH show and a Kill Steen Kill shirt under an unbuttoned blue Hawaiian-style shirt to the TV tapings.

And I don't understand bashing ROH. They have a great roster, they do actual storylines better than WWE often does, they put on five-star matches -- there's not even an average match on the ROH card -- and they invite and embrace fan involvement. The only reason not to like it that I can figure is because you don't like wrestling.

Ahh so you were almost behind commentary, nice. They're coming here in a few weeks for a show and i'm planning on going.

Funny, because I've seen a lot of mediocrity every time I've actually watched the show on TV.

Indifferent

Like I said earlier, if you guys bothered to read...

I'm sure the event was great. The TV show stinks.

It is my stance that ROH can't make a TV show worth a shit. (Part is time slot, part is the way they use their time.) but if you had the ability to see them live you'd get your money's worth.

ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week Empty
PostSubject: Re: ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week    ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week EmptyTue Apr 08, 2014 8:13 pm

Part of it is probably that it really is episodic -- if you watch part of the show one week and part again two weeks later you might miss the storyline.

They have one hour and they are wrestling-based, so most of that hour is in-ring stuff and the storyline is told in small bits over several episodes ... a promo here, commentators advancing the storyline there, a backstage segment a week later, etc.

It is out of necessity that they tape a few weeks at a time, so it isn't as "current" in the internet age ... but I avoid spoilers unless I can't watch, so I'm good with that.

My biggest criticisms of it as a show are:

1) Production values are lacking, need more cameras, better lighting, etc., but that's just not in the budget at this point. But I'd rather it look kind of dark, like a wrestling show with the old beat-up panels along the guardrails (good for banging and making noise) than look like TNA -- which tries to look big-time like WWE but only looks smaller because of it, since they don't have that kind of scale either.

2) The roster seems a bit too large for one hour a week, because they showcase a few too many people ... you see the Briscoes but you don't see them again for three weeks, or Steen once a month. Now at the live show that's good -- I don't need to see three ReDragon matches in one night, but on TV they're a bit too inclusive.

Where I think they get high marks is continuity. For instance:

Jay Briscoe wins the title. Then he legit gets injured. So they hold a tournament (I'm a total mark for tourneys) and Adam Cole wins it. Then Jay gets healthy and comes back ... with his own belt, claiming he's still the champ. So they build this over months, starting with the injury, and have a payoff with a ladder match for the titles.

Then on the next-day TV taping (not sure what order this all plays out in on TV), we have Steen -- who lost the title to Briscoe -- come out and remind Adam that not only has Cole not given him a title match, he never got a rematch with Briscoe because if the injury ... and thus he's entitled to one. So they start the build for that.

That's a one-year story arc. Before that was a story arc that started with Steen's return and ended with him taking the title and going through ROH like a wrecking ball -- an arc of a year or more. I could give you other examples that play out for months that are midcard things, but to me they do it the way it's supposed to be done.

PostSubject: Re: ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week    ROH Set For 'Big Announcement' This Week EmptyTue Apr 08, 2014 10:10 pm

With an hour and the roster they have, I think they waste a lot of time. I've seen then debut a new singles wrestling (I think) and a new tag team during TV shows and give them like 8 minutes. I get that they have to do it, but sometimes the hour they have just is terrible. If you tape five episodes at a time, sometimes the structure in which the events happen does not lend itself to creating five episodes worth watching.

I love almost everyone on the TNA or WWE roster that came from ROH. I've watched some old PPVs that were good. (Although, at times, I find it to be over-rated. The "ladder war" with Steen and Generico did not live up to the hype.) But anyone that watches that TV show must REALLY love ROH.

I really love wrestling. By extension, I really love ROH.

On the other hand, I really can't stand TNA.

Because IMO, ROH does wrestling right. I think it suffers somewhat because when it was much lesser known, when it was trading DVDs and kind of an indy cult with all these "cool" guys who were perceived as so much better than WWE, the people who liked it felt like they were in on a big secret.

Once it got wider exposure and the roster had been raided and it got the Sinclair outlet, it ceased being as "cool" to so many ... and their ROH's distinct and particular version and presentation of indy wrestling became so widespread that it wasn't distringuished from the other indy promotions that were basically copying it. Now it's "cooler" to like DGUSA/Evolve or PWG or Chikara or whatever, but go to an ROH iPPV-type event (now it's on demand on their website because of their iPPV problems, but their big shows are basically what used to be their DVD of iPPV shows) and go to one of the others and ROH is far superior. At least to me.

But to each his own.

I'm having a hard time understanding this. So is the problem that matches are booked weird? Promos? Storylines? As Pat said, the shows are episodic so if you want to see the storyline continue you have to tune in the following week.

They're terrible writing with spot-fest wrestling that's gotten progressively worse for five straight years.
