After years of waiting by fans and 18 years since the original's initial release, a remake of Final Fantasy VII was finally announced for PS4 at E3 2015.

Director Tetsuya Nomura explained that the game was discussed internally for sometime, and has finally gone ahead with production now himself and two other key members of development - producer Yoshinori Kitase and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima - were available to do it.

"The availability of these three key members finally aligned, and we were able to see a window in which we can start the production with these creators. It made it possible for us to move forward with the project," he told Digital Spy at E3 2015.

"In terms of why we made the announcement at this timing, it's because there are more and more titles being announced out of Square Enix on the PlayStation 4 platform. We figured it would be a good boost to our portfolio as well, to encourage that Square Enix is bringing out more titles on the PlayStation 4."

Nomura explained he looks forward to going ahead with the title and finishing it because of the game's stature and scope.

"The discussion of doing a Final Fantasy VII remake has, even internally, came up and went away, and it was just an up-and-down, ongoing discussion that was going on," he said.

"Now that we've finally announced it - because of the gravity of this game, it's just such a large title, not only with the expectations, but the production of it also - [I'm] just looking forward to just getting through with it and finishing as quickly as [I] can, and just giving the final product and delivering it to the fans."

Nomura has also recently said that the project wouldn't just be a simple remake.

As well as the remake, Square Enix also confirmed that the PC port of the original Final Fantasy VII would continue to be released on PS4, as well as iOS.

Tetsuya Nomura is also the director on Kingdom Hearts 3, which saw a new gameplay trailer at E3 2015.
