One thing many stealth game fans always hope to see in a new game is a way to complete it without ever killing anyone. However you might ordinarily approach such games, Alien: Isolation will provide you with the ability to reach the end without racking up a single kill, according to lead designer Gary Napper.
Speaking with GamesTM, Napper confirmed the no-kill option: "You can get through the entire game without killing someone. It's something that was, not so much a challenge, but something I felt was what the character would do. We're talking about a member of the Ripley family--they're not like characters in games that gun down civilians because they're in the way to get to the switch."
While the titular alien is the persistent threat throughout the game, you'll also encounter other enemies, too. We don't yet know everything you'll encounter, but Napper teased that developer The Creative Assembly has tricks up its sleeve we don't know about. "I think the thing we face mostly on this is when we explain the core idea of 'It's you versus the alien,' people go, 'That'll be amazing! But I'm going to be bored after three hours...'
"If you can extrapolate from at the beginning having nothing and it's just you hiding from the alien, to come up to what [we've shown so far]--and then extend that out for another while--there's actually a hell of a lot we do with the game that's really interesting. And obviously we like to mix it up a bit as well."
Napper previously indicated Isolation would take about 15 hours to play through, but with the freedom that players have--you can revisit locations you've already been to--it's hard to nail down a solid estimate. "The difficult thing is nailing a time because people can play for absolutely ages without even seeing the alien because they're being really careful and really stealthy," he said last month. "They've done nothing to call him down or there have been no explosions that he has come to investigate. Those people can get through it fairly quickly."
Isolation has looked promising in the time we've spent with it, and it was one of six games nominated for the Best of Show award from the E3 Game Critics Awards. (Evolve would end up winning). It's set for release on October 7 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Those who preorder will receive bonus content featuring the digital likenesses of Alien stars Sigourney Weaver and Tom Skerritt.
