Developer Dong Nguyen will keep making games, but Flappy Bird will be no more by the end of the weekend.

The somewhat reclusive developer of inexplicable runaway hit Flappy Bird has announced that he "cannot take this anymore" and will be removing the game from app stores in 22 hours, as of 2:02 PM EST today. Dong Nguyen explained on his Twitter account that the takedown isn't due to any legal reasons, and that he won't be selling the rights to the game.

Flappy Bird apparently is making $50k every day in ad revenue, which makes the take-down seem bizarre, but one can imagine that an indie developer that never sought the spotlight may be under a little too much pressure. He said earlier that the game has ruined his simple life, so he hates the game. Nguyen says he'll keep making games though, and with any luck, they'll experience at least a little bit of the success of Flappy Bird.

Maybe he doesn't care about the money?

Also, people are harassing him from the sound of things, so I see why he'd be angry.

Or maybe he played the game.

It's a hugely addicting game. But really though, some people are constantly bitching about this game, it's getting annoying.

Fuck these stupid c grade level games that only anyone ever even plays or even attempts to play is because its accessible on their dumb ass smartphone for 90 cents or whatever.

Good. I've seen a video of the game and it looks the most stupid shit ever.

The same could be said for Angry Birds. But dammit if that shit aint just as addictively stupid.

Its a new type of game. One where you see it and think 'That is so simple. How can people possibly mess that up? Ah well, I'll play it and show how much better then everyone I am.'

Angry Birds was an original IP that was well-polished and used its own ideas.

Flappy Bird, on the other hand:

1: Capitalized on the popularity of Angry Birds by using "____-y Bird" as its title.
2: Outright stole assets from Nintendo. Those pipes are clearly from Mario.
3: Literally copied the exact premise of another game.



That guy didn't deserve a dime.

Angry Birds' concept had been done a zillion times before, it just took off due to it's visual appeal. Didn't rip shit from other games, though, like those pipes

Last I heard Dong Nguyen committed suicide but that was a hoax I think...

Regardless, still sucks he took it down.

Also, Angry Birds is awesome.

There was a rumor going around that the only reason why the game became so popular overnight is that the guy botted the reviews for the game to make it look like an amazing game. There's a graph of actvity where it's dead on launch day until a few weeks ago. This game has been out a year, btw.
