I remember watching the Austin DVD and said that at the time he was thought of as stale and wanted a change of character but looking back he wish he didn't do it. At the time he and Rocky were most over people on the roster. Not drawing crowd reaction comparisons but we can't deny how over Cena is and the only person who has consistently rivaled him thus far is Punk. Having learned that about Austin and watching his downward spiral from #1, to main eventer after that do you think Vince and Cena are nervous about a downward spiral, not only about merch sales.

That's why they won't turn him. He's staying that way so that he can be the golden boy. If they turn him into a bad guy, it'll probably cause a downward spiral.

That's actually a really good point, this may just be the reason they are extremely reluctant to turn Cena heel.

Cena's no Austin, he's closer to a Hulk Hogan "eat your vitamins" type of goodie-two-shoes. While Austin's heel turn didn't work out for him, Hogan's certainly did.

It's not about the gimmick, it's about the fact that he's the golden boy. They all have different gimmicks.

You completely misunderstood what I was saying. Austin's heel turn didn't take well because of his gimmick, not because he was a "golden boy". Austin went from being a tough, rebellious character who would do whatever it took to achieve success despite having a boss that hated him, to being a primadonna who whined and complained incessantly. For Hogan, and also for Cena, a heel turn would mean turning a clean cut, boring good guy into an edgy and intimidating bad guy. Gimmick has everything to do with it.

I feel like you're half right and half wrong.
I halfway agree with the whole Cena is more like Hogan than Austin, but I disagree with the fact that Cena's heel turn will be like Hogan's heel turn. It just got to the point where if Cena turns heel it would be like Chris Jericho turning Heel (if that make sense) People will love it, but not give it too much attention. Therefore Cena's heel turn will cost not only him but the company (Specially if they don't find a top babyface) I want Cena to turn heel, but sometimes (rarely) I just feel like it's not a great business move.

But I think the main argument is that Cena shouldn't turn heel because he is the face of the company, like Hogan and Austin were before him. Maybe you're right that it worked more for Hogan because of his gimmick, but Austin is still right in saying Cena should not turn heel.

I agree, now is not the right time to turn Cena heel. It might could've worked at this last year's WrestleMania, but if he turned heel now it'd be disastrous. To Razor's point, Hogan really wasn't the top face of WCW when he turned heel, he was entering what many at the time thought was his last few years wrestling (which is laughable now).

I think a solid heel run at some point in Cena's character would do a lot for his legacy, but the company isn't currently in a good position to do that.

Even though I think a heel Cena would make great storylines, I still think it'd be an awful idea. That's just me, I guess.

It's always a risk to turn a top face draw heel, usually turns occur when a wrestler isn't getting over (see: Alberto Del Rio). The only way it would ever work, and this isn't ever guaranteed, is if they can get just as much heat as a heel as they did when they were face. If that happens, and it is a gamble, then they need to have a new guy set up to take that spot. Then the newly turned heel can feud with the up-and-coming babyface, getting the face over enough to take their spot. All of that is too risky for a company like WWE to try.

Once Cena's merch sales slip, and the kids get older and lose interest, then a heel turn might be possible. Ideally it'd be at a point in his career where even the internet has given up hope of Cena ever having any sort of gimmick change, because then the surprise factor alone would make the turn a memorable event for the current generation the way Hogan's was at that time.

Yea, I think the bottom line is, if they turn Cena, they have to have a replacement "golden boy" or it will flop. If The Rock came back full time, they could turn Cena heel, and then see who stepped up on the face side.

They just don't have someone to replace him right now.
