A press release for the Nintendo Entertainment System has been posted online, revealing some interesting details about Nintendo's first home console.
Video game collector Steve Lin shared the document in a post on Twitter (via Polygon). In his tweet, Lin highlights market research funded by Nintendo back in 1986, which reveals the chief reason behind the console's popularity among kids in the United States. Believe it not, the main reason kids wanted the console was the robotic toy that came bundled with the system.
According to the survey, 19 percent of those whose child asked for the system said R.O.B. was their primary reason for wanting the console. Trailing close behind with 17 percent each were those who cited "quality of graphics" and "variety of game paks" as for why their kid wanted system.
The Nintendo Entertainment System first launched in Japan as the Famicom back in 1983. Two years later, the console made its way to the United States in select locations, ahead of a more widespread release shortly thereafter.
Nintendo's first system was home to a number of great games, many of which earned a spot in IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time.
