| Geek.com has published a new article calling for all fan chants in pro wrestling to be “killed.” The article author cites this week’s Raw crowd in Chicago, and below is an excerpt commenting on the crowd’s behavior during the John Cena vs Dolph Ziggler match:
kalistoAnd that, right there, is the problem with wrestling chants: They aren’t about the wrestlers or the action in the ring — they’re about the people doing the chants. Sure, some of them might seem to be, but the connective tissue is extremely thin. You could make an argument that a “THIS IS AWESOME” chant is all about showing respect to the wrestlers in the ring, but it’s an argument I won’t ever buy. Why’s that? Because there’s a much better, much easier way to show respect to the men and women in the ring, one that doesn’t pull the spotlight away from the wrestlers and onto the crowd: Cheer the faces and boo the heels. That simple advice accomplishes everything that chanting does, while still keeping the focus on the actual action

| How about this? Don't put on a shit show. Don't try to make a three hour show each week. And stop boring people with these long promos. |

| Also, cheers are kind of a thing in sports and it doesn't take away from the action. The logic is kind of silly. |

| Yeah WWE was always more about trying to entertain fans. Making them laugh or hate someone. It would be totally off if you watched a WWE show and they reacted like a Japanese crowd. Even the WWE fans in Japan won't react like New Japan fans. |

| not all chants need to die, but there are many they do. Like the CM Punk chants (Not as bad as they use to be), WHAT!?, and maybe the most annoying is the "WE are Awesome". |

| I honestly prefer the chants the most when they're just fucking stupid. Love hearing a creative, unique chant, especially if I'm live at the event. I've tried to start the stupidest shit when I've gone: "Let's go Casper" during a Sheamus match (2 separate events... one of them had a decent amount joining in and could be slightly heard on Raw) "FAN-DAN-GO HOME" <--- Also brought a sign that said that at WM 29 Both of those followed by claps are two I remember off the top of my head. Basically when I go, me and my friends are really thinking of anything that's 4 syllables followed by the *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* So the guy's got a point about narcissistic fans lol |

| Honestly, I used to agree with this sentiment, but now I don't. After seeing the shit we had to go through in 2008-2011. OMG. Like 90% of the crowd seemed like they didn't even wanna be there and were just there cause it's a tv show or cause their kids dragged them along. The chants were so boring, they cheered during entrances for the REALLY big guys (HHH, Cena, Orton, Edge, Batista, Taker) and were dead silent for the entire rest of the show.
Watch any PPV from that time if you want to see why smarky crowds are so much better. Now, I love having smarky crowds. I love the crowds like the RR crowds for the past 2 years that borderline rioted because they didn't want Vince's stupid decisions shoved down their throats. The crowds that respond to pretty much everyone. Look at the difference between a Chicago/Philly crowd and a Texas/Las Vegas crowd. The smarky crowd will pop for almost everything in one way or another and the smarky crowd will cheer for Cena and then stay on their ass the entire show.
I'm glad we have smarky crowds now. I would kill to have a crowd that's exactly like full sail but bigger. |
