Update: Nintendo has just revealed a release date for the UK version of the NFC adaptor.
Via Twitter, Nintendo says the NFC reader/write accessory for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS will release on October 2, 2015.

Nintendo announced the NFC reader adapter last year, and we haven’t heard much about it since then. Now, we know it’s coming this fall on the same day as the newly-announced Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. The hockey puck-shaped device allows you to use amiibo with your regular 3DS or 2DS systems. During a recent investor meeting, Nintendo announced that the external 3DS NFC reader is coming to Japan in summer 2015.
