As featured in the New Xbox One Experience trailer released last week during E3, Cortana is coming to the Xbox One. However, it appears you'll have to have a Kinect in order to take advantage of all she has to offer.
Spotted by The Verge, the fine print at the end of the trailer reads, "Kinect required for Cortana speech recognition."
Notice the fine print. This makes sense, as the whole point of Cortana is to be a digital assistant responding to voice commands. However, Kinect was all but absent from the Xbox conference last Monday, and wasn't a focal point for Microsoft at E3 this year.
The Kinect was unbundled from the Xbox One last year. The move allowed Microsoft to competitively price the console, resulting in an increase in sales.
It will be interesting to see whether Microsoft will accommodate Xbox One owners without Kinect, maybe letting them use a headset microphone to communicate with Cortana. IGN has reached out to Microsoft for clarification, and will update this story should we learn more.
