The Smurfs Reboot Pushed to 2017

Quote :: The currently untitled Smurfs reboot was originally planned for a summer of 2016 release, but Sony Pictures Animation announced Wednesday that the film has been pushed to March 31, 2017.

The reboot is a fully animated feature with no connection to the recent animated/live action hybrid films. It's said to be closer in tone to Peyo's original Smurfs. "With a fully animated feature close in tone and design to Peyo's original creation, we're embracing everything that has made the Smurfs so special for audiences worldwide," said Sony Pictures' President of Worldwide Distribution Rory Bruer.

Director Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) updated fans on The Smurfs' production blog, saying, "So when my partners and I here at Sony Pictures Animation realized that rushing towards a summer 2016 release date meant having to launch production on a story that was not fully in the place we wanted it to be yet, we have decided to give ourselves a little more time to not compromise quality and deliver the truly smurftastic movie we all want to see on the big screen."

Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs 2) and Mary Ellen Bauder (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) are producing the film for Sony. There is no cast officially attached to the film yet, but recent reports suggested Homeland's Mandy Patinkin was in final negotiations to voice Papa Smurf.
