The Lego Movie 2 will be set four years after the first film.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller - who directed the first film - have revealed details for the sequel.
"We were really interested in what happens to that boy who's in the meta story in the first movie when he's four years older," Miller told Empire. "When he's an adolescent, how does that change his point of view?
"And it's nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence."
The pair are writing the Lego Movie sequel's script, but do not expect to direct the film.
Lord said that he is pleased to have other filmmakers tackle the material and take it in directions that they would not have thought of.
"I think it would get boring if we directed them all, quite honestly," he added.
Lord and Miller are also producing The Lego Batman Movie, with Chris McKay directing and Seth Grahame-Smith writing.
The Lego Movie 2 will be released in 2018.
