| There has been a lot of speculation over whether or not the newest crop of NXT signees will receive a name change upon their official debut with the company. Japanese sensation KENTA officially made his debut at NXT Takeover this Thursday night, live on the WWE Network, and announced that his name going forward will be Hideo Itami.
Hideo was introduced by NXT general manager William Regal. As we noted earlier today, Ric Flair was scheduled to make the introductions, but had to pull out of tonight’s event at the last minute due to personal conflicts. Hideo did his best to thank the WWE Universe in English, saying that he was honored and excited to be in NXT. He also cut a promo in Japanese, but was interrupted by The Ascension. The now former tag champions attacked Itami, who came back and took out both men. He ended the segment by sitting on a chair in the ring, drawing a “line” in the ring and begging The Ascension to cross it. |

| If it's true he came up with the name himself, cant fault the company for this one. |

| Of course they changed his name. It's all to do with licensing -- or I guess they could just let them keep their names and cut individual deals with everyone for hte video games and charge $600 each for them.
The last guy who kept his name, CM Punk, made sure that no one ever again will get to do that by having his lawyer send a 22-page letter threatening a lawsuit to WWE over just this issue.
Changing names hasn't hurt Daniel Bryan or Ambrose or Rollins or Luke Harper or any other indy darling that I can see it won't hurt MR. ALL CAPS KENTA or Devitt either. When I say that half the audience that watches Raw and attends shows have never heard of them from their overseas exploits, I am being more than generous.
They can call him Porky the Pig for all I care: if he is booked strongly and can do the job in the ring, he'll be fine.
His biggest obstacle is he's supposed to be a badass and he's very small by WWE measures ... like smaller than Ryder or Ziggler or "normal-sized" WWE guys ... and he's also learning English so we'll see what he can do promo-wise. If he can overcome those two things, it doesn't matter what his name is. |

| It's not a bad name at all really, so can't complain. |

| It's not JUST that he's got a name change, it's that he already has so many obstacles and that adding one more by potentially dividing his natural fan base might cause the creative to get tentative if or when he stumbles. |

| I don't think KENTA fans are going to stop liking him because his name is different. Non-KENTA fans won't even realize the change has taken place. Rebranding is only an issue when they end up with a stupid new name (someone shared an article about Fandango earlier, and I think a lot of the points there are valid). There's nothing wrong with the name Hideo, though. He's no better or worse off than if he'd debuted as KENTA. |

| I actually really agree with Saintpat and Nearphotison. Very good points, I have changed my mind on him at least. I still think Fergal is a dumb name though. |

| Do we know for a fact that Devitt is competing under the name Fergal? It seems unusual to me that WWE would use the man's real name, especially when he's best known under a ring name. Aren't they just referring to him as Fergal in interviews and stuff? |
