The man who shot and killed John Lennon in 1980 apologized for "being such an idiot" during his parole hearing last week. As previously reported, Mark David Chapman was denied parole in his eighth attempt on August 20th. The Independent has the transcript of the parole hearing, in which Chapman expresses remorse for his crime.
"I am sorry for causing that type of pain," Chapman told the three-person panel. "I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory. Many, many people loved him. He was a great and talented man and they are still hurting. I get letters, so that's a major factor. It's not a regular crime."
Chapman is next eligible for parole in 2016. He was sentenced to twenty years to life after he pled guilty to second-degree murder in the slaying, which happened outside Lennon's Manhattan apartment on December 8th, 1980.
