The Last of Us movie adaptation will be "quite different" to the game, according to script writer Neil Druckmann.
Druckmann, who previously served as creative director on the game, admitted that it would be difficult to tell the same story in just two hours.
"In two hours you can't tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours," Druckmann told MCV.
"I'm in the middle of it now, and it's been super difficult because there's so much that happens in The Last of Us - even just in the cinematics - that can't fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue."
Comparing The Last of Us to a novel, Druckmann said that the most important part of the story is the relationship between Joel and Ellie.
"Start with those, and cut everything else out," Druckmann continued.
"It's been really difficult to cut certain things out, but what I'm starting to get is this really focused narrative that's about these two characters.
"Some parts will be similar to the game and some parts will be quite different, but it's kind of interesting in helping me understand this other medium and its strengths compared to video games."
The movie will be produced in collaboration with Spider-Man and Evil Dead director Sam Raimi.
During a recent Comic-con panel, Druckmann revealed that he wanted to write a different ending for the movie, but was talked out of it by Raimi.
The Last of Us Remastered, an updated version of the 2013 release, made its PS4 debut earlier this month. It topped the all-format gaming chart in its first week on sale.
