The Kings are offering Jason Thompson and Derrick Williams to the Pistons for Josh Smith.
PF/C Jason Thompson has about 3 Years, $19.2M remaining on his contract. Thompson was frustrated with his declining role on the Kings last season, but would offer much needed competition to Josh Harrelson, currently playing on the minimum, for Stan Van Gundy at Power Forward and Center.
SF/PF Derrick Williams, the #2 overall pick in 2011, was a dead-eye shooter in college, but has never turned in a solid campaign as a shooter in the pros. Williams, 23, is still a solid prospect and might benefit from Stan Van Gundy's emphasis on shot selection and spacing on offense. Realistically, he doesn't fit into the teams rotation if the Pistons retain Restricted Free Agent Greg Monroe. He could battle Jonas Jerebko time for time as a stretch-four and reserve small forward, but Jerebko shot 42% from 3 as a reserve last season after Mo Cheeks was fired. It's unlikely Williams would be more than an 11th man.
Meanwhile, Josh Smith struggled offensively for the Pistons, but played out of position as a 3rd big in an awkwardly regressive offense. Smith, however, was an excellent defender last season and analytics championed him as a premiere perimeter defender at the Small Forward position. Smith has grown into the size to be a natural four, and would be a nice complement to DeMarcus Cousins. However, the Kings are thinking long term with the deal, and believe a Smith and Cousins pairing would lure Smith's cousin, Rajon Rondo, to Sacramento when he hits Free Agency.
It's likely that Joe Dumars had the same idea when he signed Josh Smith to a four year, $54M contract, as Dumars has always coveted Rondo. Dumars is out of Detroit, and the Rondo/Smith combo does not fit Stan Van Gundy's most recent one-in-four-out style on offense or even his high-post offense he ran in Miami.
