If you were looking forward to seeing more of (or hearing more about) Square Enix's eagerly-anticipated duo of upcoming RPGs -- Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III -- you'll be disappointed to hear that it looks like both games will be skipping E3 this year.
This information comes by way of a Square Enix representative, who provided IGN with a translation of an interview with Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto, an interview conducted in the popular Japanese gaming publication Famitsu. In the interview, Hashimoto says:
First of all, I’d like to mention that the development of Final Fantasy XV is going smoothly. At the company, we are constantly assessing the best timing for delivering new information regarding Final Fantasy XV to our fans. Amidst the process of reviewing our promotional plan, we determined that this year’s E3 was not the best time for delivering information regarding Final Fantasy XV. Instead, we’re planning, and currently preparing towards disclosing new information during this year’s post-E3 events.
We appreciate that our fans hold high expectations for Final Fantasy XV, and I, myself, am excited about providing new information at the next best opportunity. We’d be very happy if everyone, too, could look forward to that moment.
As for Kingdom Hearts III?
Kingdom Hearts III is currently in production, but we ask for more time in delivering new information.
While it's disappointing to hear that neither game seems primed for a showing at E3, it's not exactly a surprise. Final Fantasy XV -- which was once the long-delayed Final Fantasy Versus XIII -- was revealed at E3 last year, and will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Hashimoto told Famitsu that Square Enix is "preparing an event after E3 to make new announcements" pertaining to Final Fantasy XV.
And then there's Kingdom Hearts III, a game that is almost certainly far, far off from being released. It, too, was revealed at E3 2014, and has been teased as far back as 2009. It, like Final Fantasy XV, will come to both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but as both Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV are sharing the same director, Square Enix has been candid in noting that we should expect a significant delay between their releases.
